So the brain soup leading to my embracing the pen for my first book was ready. Spoiler alert: there is no happy ending here, beyond learning to embrace the "practice".
I began "mastering" (scripting role-playing sessions in Dungeons & Dragons) years before I wrote a "story" in the traditional sense. In the twenty years I have spent learning about writing professionally (as an editor and journalist) and creatively, I often think about this.
